03/10/2023 Intro to Cinematography I

Gonzalo’s Class

What is cinema?
cinematography definition?

Cinematography is the process of creating images by recording motion and the light reflected or emitted from objects, either electronically or chemically.”

Recording pictures process – 5 steps

Exposure? technical side vs artistic side(all is acceptable)
Triangle of exposure – correct exposure value

ISO – international orgnaisation for standardisation
high iso results in grainy pictures

Aperture – F-stop, focal
Focus- f/32 Everything is in focus
f/1.4 less things in focus, avg is f/8 or f/11
1.4 is shallow DOF
8 is deep DOF
DOP is affected by Aperture, distance from the subject, and lens focal length.

Joker example – rim light

three different layers
focus
light temperatures

RDJ kiss kiss bang bang example

Aspect ratio
order of information recorded by the eyes
left to right
telephoto lens

Another joker example

symmetry
perspective
monotone vs bright color

separating subj into layers, direction,

Sensor sizes

Full frame 35mm
and other cropped?

Shutter Speed
length of time
measured in a fraction of a second
motion blur

FPS
24/25 for film
30 for TVC, games
60 for games,
>120 games, slow-mo
line is burred

Resolution
1080p,2k,4k,8k

shutter speed rotation
fps vs shutter speed, x2 times

saving pt Ryan example

Lens
Focal length
controls angle of view & optical distortion
50mm close to the human eye
35mm

Lens distortion
for wide angle lens??

Blade Runner eg wide
hangover iii eg narrow, focal point
matrix eg frame composition
killing them softly eg  light color, uniform color
avengers eg too much going on

50mm  standard lens – very little optical distortion

the counselor eg the lighting

telephoto lens – focal length above 50mm

magnifies the subject, narrows the angle of view

war dogs eg – telephoto, zoom on the face

interstellar eg

the revenant eg – fish eye lens, extreme distortion

macro lens – life-size magnification

Digital Formats:

mp4, mov
AVI, ProRes

Reflections

We had our first class for compositing with Gonzalo today. This class was interesting because we did not dive straight into the technical aspect but we studied film aesthetics. I think the principles of film is important because I think this knowledge cannot be simply transferred and applied. Film and composition need to be practiced along with the underlying concepts at the back of our minds. I look forward to the second part of this lessons.

Homework:
Create a mood board of pictures taken in relation to the topic of “time”.
